Although the tight economy has affected the home improvement industry, three new kitchen showrooms, one combining two businesses, have opened in Scottsdale recently.

Tops in Stone

Owner: Mirza Penez, owner of Tops in Stone, moved to Arizona in 1999 after living as a refugee in Germany for several years. He and his family fled the civil war in Bosnia.

Specialty: Natural stone tile, mosaics, backsplashes, mirror surrounds, bathrooms and flooring.

On the economy: Partnering with Premier Glass & Mirror saved on showroom costs and better displayed both businesses' products.

"A lot of interior decorators have started to work from home, so they need a place to go with their clients in a nice environment where they can see the craftsmanship," Penez says.

Premier Glass & Mirror

Owner: Keith Corley

Specialty: Shower enclosures, both framed and frameless, custom chiseled-edge mirrors, custom glass tabletops.

On the economy: Corley had spent several years focusing on manufacturing glass products, but after the recession switched to high-end custom design, like carved glass and frameless showers.

What's in the combined showroom: There's a Turkish steam shower and several full-sized bathroom displays combining custom shower doors and natural stone treatments, plus a custom glass table.

Details: The combined Tops in Stone/Premier Glass & Mirror showroom, 7835 E. Gelding Dr., will open to the public from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday with discounts, refreshments and designers on hand. A portion of the grand-opening proceeds will benefit the Fresh Start Women's Foundation. Visit www.topsinstonellc.com or www.premierglassllc.com.
